“鼠年”別說成 mouse year，正確表達(dá)是這個！
昨天在國外論壇上看到一個問題：
“What kinds of conversations only happen in China？”
什么樣的話只有中國人才會說？
下面有一個神回復(fù)：

眼看著春節(jié)越來越近，不少歪果仁也開始期待過一下中國的“鼠年春節(jié)”，但如果有外國朋友想讓你介紹一下鼠年春節(jié)，你可別把“鼠年”說成了mouse year！
進(jìn)入今天主題前，咱們先熱熱身，你知道“本命年”用英語怎么說嗎？
其實中國的生肖跟西方的星座挺像的，都是12個。“星座”的英文是 star sign，同理，“生肖”的英文可以說成 animal sign，造句：
我屬鼠。
My animal sign is rat.“生肖”也可以說成 birth sign，表示“出生時所對應(yīng)的那個 animal sign。所以，“本命年”的英文是 the year of ones birth sign，例如：
2020是我的本命年。
2020 is the year of my birth sign.再來看“鼠年”的英語到底怎么說？
首先，梳理一下所有表示“鼠”的英語單詞：
在我們印象中，“鼠”只有兩個詞 mouse 和 rat。
mouse 是單數(shù)，復(fù)數(shù)形式為 mice；rat 的復(fù)數(shù)很簡單，就是 rats。那么這兩個詞有何區(qū)別？下面是牛津詞典截圖：
Mouse: animal that is covered in fur and has a long thin tail. Mice live in fields, in people’s houses or where food is stored.
[譯] mouse 指的是全身灰毛，尾巴細(xì)長的動物。它們生活在田地里、人們的家中、以及儲藏食物的地方。
rat: a small animal with a long tail, that looks like a large mouse, usually considered a pest.
[譯] 一種有著長尾巴的動物，看著像大型的 mouse，通常被認(rèn)為是 pest（害蟲，有害的動物）。
通過比較兩個詞的定義，我們能找到的唯一差別就是：rat是一種體型更大的 mouse。
我后來在網(wǎng)上又搜到了一張詳細(xì)對比圖，給出了mouse 和 rat 更多差別：
表示“鼠”的單詞中，我們選用哪個詞表示“鼠年”里的“鼠”呢？
一般來說，表示“生肖”的單詞，優(yōu)先使用通俗易懂的口語詞，比如，“蛇”會用 snake，而不是 serpent；“?！睍?ox，而不是 buffalo；“兔”會用 rabbit，而不是 hare。
所以 rat 肯定是當(dāng)仁不讓的，那“年”如何處理呢？難道是 year rat？
錯！表達(dá)中國“生肖年”的地道英語結(jié)構(gòu)其實是：the year of the + 某個生肖的英文。
如果出現(xiàn)在英文標(biāo)題里，第一個the可以省略。
如果你不信，可以用 google 檢驗一下，輸入“the year of mouse”后，google 檢索到的信息全都是“the year of the rat”，請看：
所以“鼠年”的地道英文表達(dá)是 the year of the rat，記住了嗎？
可見在英文世界中，“the year of the rat”已經(jīng)成為一個約定俗成的表達(dá)了，大家記住即可。

說到這里，有讀者可能覺得表示“雞”的 rooster 有點難，為什么不用更通俗易懂的 chicken 呢？
這里還得考慮“歧義”的因素， chicken 還可以表示“雞肉”，用在年份里不太合適；rooster 沒有這樣的歧義，只表示威武神氣的“大公雞”。

注意：為了避免歧義，牛不用 cow；羊不用 sheep；雞不用 chicken,可千萬不要一張口說錯了哦。

rat on sb 泄露秘密；告密
這里的rat做動詞使用，表示告密，出賣，多用在非正式的場合。
They tried to find out who had ratted on them.
他們試著找到是誰出賣了他們。
smell a rat 感到不妙
直接翻譯是“聞到一只老鼠”，十分形象地表達(dá)出“感覺到了不對勁”，也可以這么說“聞到了一絲詭異的氣味”。
Why are they looking for me? I smell a rat.
他們?yōu)槭裁丛谡椅?？我感覺到事情不對。
在英語中，rats除了老鼠，還有“胡扯，差勁，卑鄙之人”的意思。
They should be killed off like rats.
他們應(yīng)該像老鼠一樣被殺掉。
