“ Hit the open man.”
每當人們問起我的籃球哲學，我都要給他們講個故事。1971年夏天，我參加了第一次籃球訓練營，這是我11歲生日的禮物。

Whenever people ask about my basketball philosophy, I have to tell them a story. In the summer of 1971, I went to my first basketball camp, a present for my 11th birthday. At the camp, we watched a movie about the New York Knicks who won the 1970 NBA championship with a dramatic Game 7 win over the Los Angeles Lakers when injured team captain Willis Reed entered the arena just before tipoff and inspired his team to victory. Head Coach Red Holzmanwas famous for his motto, “ Hit the open man,” which meant to share the ball and pass to whoever was open. That concept influences everything I have done as a coach over the past 40 years.

Phil Jackson, who won 11 NBA Championshipsas the coach of the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers was a member of that 1970 Knicks team that also won again in 1973. He credited Red Holzman’s Play Tough Defense and Hit the Open Man Philosophy for how he coached his teams. That legendary, almost mythical, 1970 New York Knicks team of 5 players who could all defend, pass and shoot, is the ideal that I am always striving towards when I’m coaching on the court.
